Did you know?
Did you know that the Dragon Fruit, or pitaya, is actually a species of cactus know as Hylocereus? This unusual cactus is a climber and can grow to heights of more than 10 meters on a proper support.
The night blooming flowers are a pristine white and can grow up to 14 inches long, and are extremely fragrant. Under ideal conditions the plant can bloom up to 15 times a year, yielding a very respectable amount of fruit as a crop.
The fruit itself has a unique look, covered with a bright pink or red rind with green-tipped scales, thus giving it its name. The fleshy edible portion inside may be either white or red and contains countless tiny black seeds. It is similar in taste to the kiwifruit – mildly sweet and very juicy. Popular in Asia, the fruit is known to have many health benefits.
